A broad team of Vancouver Coastal Health staff is providing health care for Syrian refugees arriving in the city at a specialized clinic.
About 200 refugees a week are streaming through the Bridge Clinic in the Evergreen Community Health Centre in East Vancouver.
Medical coordinator Dr. Mei-ling Wiedmeyer says the specialized team is the first point of contact with the health care system for most Syrians coming to B.C.
“Generally people have come reasonably healthy so far. We’ve been seeing quite a number of large families and reasonably healthy parents with neglectic chronic diseases, diabetes, hypertension, things like that.”
Wiedmeyer says the next step is trying to find the refugees a doctor in the communities where they’ll eventually reside.
